Food, location & things to do

The location

About Time is in the ever-so-friendly eco-tourist part of Gambia, and you will be safer than in any city or on any beach in the Western world! There’s no real need to leave About Time, as it’s a large and gorgeous piece of paradise, with acres of golden sand and jungle, blue-green ocean with surf - but we are only 1km away from the ancient village of Kartong.

It is the Southern most edge of Gambia, bordered by the River Hallahin - and on the opposite bank lies Senegal. Kartong has a beautiful, slow, friendly and ancient way of life - and though the more prosperous citizens now have mains electricity, it's a cultural cul-de sac - and the market underneath the huge mango tree at the village's centre carries on much as it did thousands of years ago, and goats, cows and children still stroll nonchalantly across the narrow streets. There is a sacred crocodile pool in the village which is well worth a visit, as well as the cafe's, bars and restaurants. Shops provide visitors with all they could need. Not far from About Time there is the "Reptile Farm" which is a zoo of the strange local amphibians and reptiles - which all get released again after a year. A short walk along the beach or through the jungle leads to Little's Lodge lodge, which has wi-fi. The whole region is magical and steeped in mysticism - if you don't believe in Magic - well you might by the time you leave us!

We can pick you up by taxi from the airport, and organise taxis to take you wheresoever you wish. Brikama, the dusty local market town is half an hour's drive and a hive of activity and commerce. The nightlife, clubs and high life of the country’s tourist hotspot - the Senegambia Strip - is only around 40 minutes drive - and we can of course arrange transport there and back for you, as well as advising you on keeping safe in the bright lights of the tourist strip.
